For the last 2 years Consumer Electronics have been honing their skills on the London stage, from supporting black metal bands (such as Deafheaven) to inadvertently provoking the forces of law and order at their recent headlining slot at London Contemporary Music Festival.

Finally available, after almost two years of driving us to the brink of insanity… A massive four CD retrospective of Skullflower's early works from 1986 – 1990, featuring all the material previously released on Broken Flag, Shock, Majora and Forced Exposure, plus around two hours of previously unheard music – 14 tracks spread across the series. And this is not 'out-take' dross used to fill up CDs, this is essential early Skullflower providing further insight into their uniquely twisted musical world.

All material has been digitally mastered by Richard Whittaker at FX, and each CD comes in a deluxe gatefold card cover and inner sleeve with newly unearthed artwork by Matthew. Booklets feature extensive notes and previously unseen flyers, posters and photos.

Exclusive to MAIL ORDER CUSTOMERS ONLY we are pleased to offer a set limited to 250 comprising all four CDs, a one-sided 12" of Skullflower's first ever concert plus a stamped and hand-numbered package of six reproduction (pretty much unseen by anyone) flyers and handbills, five designed by Matthew.
The concert on the 12" is the only one to feature the Bower/Dennison/Jaworzyn/Mundy line-up. Recorded on October 7th, 1987 in a 'bottom of the bill' support slot at the Bull & Gate, the 12" features Marilyn Burns, Slaves and Let it Ride (which later metamorphosed into Wave).

This previously uncirculated recording is sourced from SJ's cassette archive, and the record label features a detail from the MB-designed gig flyer. While the flyer has Skullflower playing as Total, the cassette is labelled 'Raiders', The Young Raiders being a 'questionable taste' band name kicked around as a 'tribute' to a particularly squalid Brixton gang. The 12" will not be repressed or made available in any other format and will not be available in shops.

Yes, it’s finally here. Re-mastered and re-packaged, “A Sucked Orange” has been out of print for years now, and here is coupled with the previously cassette only release “Scrag”.

Steven Stapleton: “Sucked Orange was not conceived as an album. During the eighties I had accumulated several dozen reels of old worn and drastically edited quarter inch magnetic tapes, the debris from Sylvie and Babs, Spiral Insana, Large Ladies etc. Normally I would record over previously mixed material but these tapes had hundreds of spliced edits and general abuse (I liked to screw up balls of tape and then try to play ’em back) which would mean dropouts and distortion had I tried to re-record over them. I decided to throw them out.

A friend suggested I keep some of the more interesting bits and bobs, which I did, although I had no idea what to do with them until Mark Hayward of Vinyl Experience expressed an interest. He liked what he heard and wanted to release them as a 12” picture disc. The picture disc was not to be but the album came out soon after on UD via Vinyl Experience in 1987.

The cassette Scrag was compiled from the same source material and became part of the Untied Diaries limited tape box, also issued in 1987.”

Andrew Liles: “In 2008 I heard that Andrew W.K. was producing an album by Lee 'Scratch' Perry. I knew Andrew through his contributions both live and in the studio with Current 93. So being a fan of 'Scratch' I pleaded to be sent the multi-tracks so that I could make my own 'dub' mix purely for my own entertainment. I ditched all the existing music and recorded my own then added Mr.Perry's voice. I sent the results back to Andrew who seemed to like them at the time and there was some talk of releasing the mix some day, alas that day never arrived."

Roll on 4 years and I have remixed those remixes, removed any sign of Lee 'Scratch' Perry (due to legal reasons) and added a further 3 'dub' mixes to an album called 'Ninki Nanka, Yumboes & Monsters'. The album is on CD only.

November 2007,Venice. It was cold,damp and foggy. Nurse With Wound were playing 2 nights at the Teatro Fondamenta Nuove, with Blind Cave Salamander as support act. Listening to them perform, Steven Stapleton felt that some of what they played reminded him of the classic Nurse work, `Soliloquy for Lilith'. He suggested that the two bands should explore the possibility of playing live together, to explore that piece,with a view to recording an album. Forward to September 2009 when, after rehearsals, Nurse With Wound (Steven
Stapleton and Colin Potter) and Blind Cave Salamander (Fabrizio Palumbo, Julia Kent and Paul Beauchamp) perform their live version of Soliloquy for the first time at the Mutamento Festival in Turin. The audience responded with great enthusiasm. The cabbalistic proceedings of that evening are contained on this recording.

This CD is the first collaboration of Steven Stapleton's Nurse With Wound and composer/sculptor Graham Bowers. It is, without doubt, one of the best things we have ever released. It's an extremely unnerving, but also hauntingly moving listening experience.

The work is an attempt to create a musical illustration of the "goings-on" in the brain during the last hour and three minutes of a life after suffering a major stroke. It is multi-layered and is primarily concerned with the internal chaos caused by the loss of control of thought processes, responses and consequential actions, with all types of incoherent disjointed memories and present real time events - as well as moments of lucidity, panic and fear - clashing, merging and evolving.

It's essentially one long piece, but is presented in three parts:

1. "...a life as it now is,
2. ...is not what it was,
3. . ...and will never be again"

URGENT UPDATE RE "SALT":

It has been brought to our attention that the main copies of the LP have a fault. We had heard and approved test pressings, but were yet to hear the actual "hot off the press" run. They are faulty, they have to be re-pressed. We had decided to delay shipping of "The Vernacular Surface" editions until today, as we added a final "layer" to the packing to make sure they arrive all over the world in perfect shape. So, it is with regret that we have to announce that shipping is another week or so away for the limited sets and the actual "Salt" release is now delayed further. The whole set was on display at the excellent NWW show at Koko in London on Sunday and was met with a lot of excitement and praise. Our eternal thanks go to Darius, without whom this would be even more of a mess.

The special edition of this release will be ready to ship during the next week. The set consists of the following:

The "Salt" LP release, which is the LP in clear vinyl and comes complete with a full colour insert.

A 12" vinyl art object, which has been individually hand created using mixed media, signed and numbered by Steven Stapleton on one side (each one is unique and original) and is "playable" on the other. The recording on the playable side is unavailable elsewhere and only 100 copies have been made before the metalwork was removed from the pressing plant.

Both pieces are then housed in a screen printed thick frosted plastic outer sleeve. All 100 copies have been professionally photographed in Ireland and will form part of a book that will be published by us next year. All subscribers who have bought the set will be thanked in the book when it is published, so please let us know if you do not wish to be included.

Because of this edition's high value, we will only be despatching via insured courier, or if it is not possible to send a courier to your country, fully insured mail will be used. The shipping will probably not be cheap, but the risks are far too high to trust any copy to chance.

COMUS: East Of Sweden

The seminal British progressive rock/folk band Comus are back! Their classic debut album, "First Utterance", release in 1971, is on just about anybody who's anybody's list of "Desert Island" records.

"East of Sweden" is a live CD recorded at the Melloboat Festival in 2008, which was the first time the band had played live in 34 years. They were met with a tumultuous reception and this fantastic CD is a great document from that show. It is also the first release on the Dirter subsidiary imprint "Gnostic Dirt", launched by Steve Pittis and David Tibet.

"Salt" was created as a continuous backdrop to Steven Stapleton and David Tibet's art exhibition and installation at the Horse Hospital gallery, Russell Square, London 2002. John Cage composed the piece "Radio Music" in 1956. It is scored in 8 parts (A-H) with each part to be performed either individually or together with other parts as an ensemble. The performers follow a score that is a sequence of radio frequency tunings and silent parts. Obviously, each time the piece is performed, it yields a different end result.

We present here 4 solo versions on this limited edition 10" EP. The works are performed by members of German legends, Faust and by Steve Pittis' project, Band Of Pain.  All tracks were recorded live in the studio with absolutely no overdubs.

The 10" vinyl EP is packaged in a superb gloss laminated sleeve and is strictly limited to 500 copies.

Last year we at Dirter released "Fiends With A Face" documenting the first step of James Johnston and Philippe Petit, and this time the French "musical travel-agent" teams up with Throbbing Gristle's legendary Cosey Fanni Tutti. The instrumental pieces "Mist While Sleeping" & "Invisible Whispers" were recorded a long time ago and then manufactured as unique vinyl units which Philippe Petit used during his musical sets. After many playing, their texture was gradually changing and as a result, there was an alteration in the sound.

This CD is the debut release from this band formed by Faust percussionist and German Noise Terrorist, Zappi Diermaier. Regular listeners to his work, will know by now that Zappi doesn't do "conventional". The line up features: Karin Meier:  voice,  Johannes Bahlmann:  keyboard, guitar, Fritz Renzo Heinze: bass guitar, the late Thomas E Martin: sounds, guitar and Zappi W Diermaier:  drums, tools.

The shows they play are blasted out at ear splitting volume and in their own words:  "The music of "derschlaeger" is a combination of typical German "Schlager" music and kind of abstract and aggressive instrumental overlays.

The lead vocals definitely represent the original harmonies and lyrics of the "Schlager" whereas the vocalist live performance has a more punky attitude. SCHLAGER: typical German popular songs mainly from the 60ies."  We at Dirter don't really have much to add to that, as this recording has to be heard to be believed; put simply - you won't have heard anything like this. We are delighted to say that the UK's finest mastering engineer, Denis Blackham, has been at the helm. Denis should need no introduction, as his expertise and huge legacy are second to none.

A STATEMENT FROM DIRTER RE "PARANOIA IN HI-FI" / CARGO DISTRIBUTION

We at Dirter would like to say a big "THANK YOU" to all the retail outlets that are supporting this project with such enthusiasm. It is our hope that the folks who call in to buy this CD will have a good browse while they're in and buy something else - that's the intention. At the same time we would like to say a big "FUCK YOU" to the small amount of shops who are shifting the blame for them not stocking the CD to Cargo. Cargo are working way beyond their normal working hours on this release for no financial gain in order to meet the demand. To emphasize: They have NO minimum order for this release - if a shop wants 1 copy they will send it to them. It seems a very small handful of stores feel that it's not worth their while stocking this CD, so they blame Cargo. They are missing the point of what this is trying to achieve. We DO NOT think CDs are too cheap, on the contrary.
By issuing this, our aims are (in case it's not painfully obvious):

1. To hopefully expose the music of one of the most important and innovative bands of the last 3 decades, Nurse With Wound, to many more people than are hearing them at the moment. We feel they are vastly under represented and should be heard by a much larger audience.

2. By trying to prevent the supermarket chains, online shops etc from stocking this, we are kicking back at the death blows they have dealt to independent music with their crippling price structures. As previously stated, this is NOT some kind statement that CDs should be cheaper. It is hoped that this should be the "bait" to get a few people back in the shops and re-discovering the fun in buying records, as well as reaching some who may not be familiar with NWW. It would seem that our (possibly misguided) naive idealism is being hurled back in our face by some. Well nothing's ever black and white is it? We live and learn.

Finally we would like to add how proud we are to be affiliated with Cargo Distribution and openly thank them for their efforts way beyond the call of duty on this and all of our releases. There would be no Dirter if it wasn't for Cargo.

Here at last, is part of the "missing link" in the long and ever evolving history of Ramleh.  This material bridges the gap between the (for want of a better description) early "power electronics" material and the (for want of a better description) later "noise rock" . Neither of these terms do justice to this pioneering group led by Gary Mundy.  Originally issued by Gary's own "Broken Flag" label in 1987 on cassette, "Hole in the Heart" is presented here, both expanded and remastered  on a double CD set.

To quote Anthony Di Franco (the other half of the band these days) : "...swirling phased feedback, fuzzed vocals and guitars. At the same time there were melodies, words and structures in the music, which itself consisted of very simple electronic and acoustic elements magnified to a colossal scale..."  This music has a harmonic beauty, if you look for it, that all its imitators lack. Listen and you will hear the genesis of what was to follow from many 90's underground bands such as label mates and close collaborators, Skullflower.

A thirteen year time warp and the bizarre narrative of a humble Norwegian discussing 'topical Belgian issues' from the very edge of West Yorkshire makes this a very strange recording indeed.

Former Mayhem front man Maniac (Skitliv, Sehnsucht, Bomberos) has teamed up with Andrews Liles and Czral (Virus, Ved Buens Ende, Aura Noir, Dodheimsgard) to release an album that he and Czral began working on in 1996. The 14-track album will have the title “Det Skjedde Noe Når Du Var I Belgia” (Something Happened While You Were In Belgium).

“It wasn't something we expected to do at all,” explained Maniac. “Czral and I had recorded the original material all those years ago but other commitments had meant that we were never able to get round to finishing it off and releasing it, and I’d brought it with me to the UK for my manager to listen to just out of interest, but it was a DAT tape and she didn't have the right equipment for it. I was also visiting Andrew Liles who was mastering the new Skitliv album, and preparing to master the new SEHNSUCHT album, so we converted the tape in his studio. Andrew’s enthusiasm for what he heard got the better of him, and we started working on it straight away”.

JAMES JOHNSTON & PHILIPPE PETIT - 'FIENDS WITH A FACE' CD

'"Fiends With A Face" is the first collaborative work from James Johnston and Philippe Petit.

As the titles suggest it is an hommage to the golden era of horror movies. Our two fiends wanted conjure up blood-curdling and haunting soundscapes, playing with unsettling ambiances in order to create a contemporary soundtrack for those who like to be frightened.

Philippe Petit is interested in oundtracks, even if he creates original music he'd rather be introduced as a "musical travel agent" than a composer.

His first solo album "Henry: The Iron Man" originated from a dream that Shinya Tsukamoto was working on a blurred remake of "Eraserhead", and he was to soundtrack the grotesque mutation of Henry into an "Iron Man". It is now released on Beta Lactam Ring Records.

James Johnston is the singer, multi-instrumentalist, and founding member of influential UK band Gallon Drunk, the group's last studio album The Rotten Mile being released in 2007. He also plays with Krautrock legends Faust, and has recorded and toured with a variety of other musicians such as Barry Adamson, Dot Allison, 2nd Gen, Ulan Bator, Lydia Lunch, and a member of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds from 2003-2008, (originally touring with the band in 1994).

Richard Pinhas is internationally recognized as one of France's major experimental musicians: the "father" of French electronic music. He was the founder of Heldon, a band whose violent fusion of electronics and guitar in the '70s rivalled the German electronic school.

As a guitar player he has been compared to Robert Fripp. Cited as an influence by many electronic musicians, Richard Pinhas has helped to define the Spacemusic genre. Since founding the seminal spacerock band Heldon in 1974, Pinhas has released over 15 albums, had involvement in dozens more and shaped the way we listen to music today.

Masami Akita aka Merzbow is the forerunner of Japanese electronic music, and for the last 20 years plus, has been at the top of his game ploughing more and more extreme sonic territories.

This release, recorded in Tokyo in October 2007, will surprise a lot of people in its sheer beauty. This is a collaboration that works in the true sense of the word, with each artist complimenting the other over six long sprawling tracks each occupying the whole of a side.

The set comes housed in a gloss laminated sleeve on 140 gm vinyl - yes, that’s 140 gm vinyl; the quality is superior to thick 180 gm (and we have finally had this proved to us by a very patient expert in this field) and is limited to just 1000 copies.

Available for order now after what seems like an eternity. The first 1000 copies of this will be a 2 LP set. This contains the "Disconnected" album on sides 1 & 2, and sides 3 & 4 contain exclusive previously unreleased Faust and NWW material. Side three is pure Faust, from the "Disconnected" session, three tracks totalling over 20 minutes. Side four is pure Nurse With Wound, one long track, clocking in at almost 10 minutes. The double LP will also be pressed in clear yellow vinyl and be housed in a beautiful gloss laminated sleeve.
